Bedroom with a cloud mural and a branching light over the bed

With a light hung over the bed, people always discuss the height and almost never how wide it is, which on an open-armed fitting like this one is the figure that causes the most trouble when it's wrong. The second thing holding the room together is on the bed: all the linen is the same blue-grey and there isn't a single pattern, so the only thing distinguishing one cushion from another is the fabric. With a single colour, texture stops being decoration and becomes the structure.

Slat panel tinted blue-grey

A panel with the slats colour-stained rather than clear-varnished, which is what lets you take them to a mural's exact tone rather than the colour of the wood. Stain still shows the grain, unlike lacquer, so the wall keeps its texture even though it loses the original colour. If you're staining it yourself, test on an offcut first: the same coat gives a different tone on oak than on pine, and on veneered board it comes out darker than the sample suggests.

Branching ceiling light with glass globes

A frame of slender arms with a sphere at the end of each, set at varying heights. Before buying, check two things that rarely get highlighted: the reach of the longest arm, because the quoted diameter is an average, and whether the globes unscrew, which decides whether cleaning it takes ten minutes or an afternoon. With many light points, use a low-output bulb in each, or together they end up giving more light than a bedroom wants.

Washed linen pillowcase

Pre-washed linen, among the most matt fabrics there is, which is why it contrasts so strongly with a velvet in the same colour. On a bed done in one tone it's the piece that supplies visible texture without adding any pattern. Worth knowing that it always creases and that the creasing is the finish, not a fault; and that the first few washes soften it considerably, so don't judge it by how it feels on day one.

Microfibre glove for cleaning glass

A microfibre glove you put on your hand, letting you wrap a sphere and turn it rather than having to hold it with your other hand to wipe it. On a fitting with slender arms that difference matters, because any pull takes the frame out of true. It works equally for globes, glass shades and exposed bulbs, and a double-sided version is worth having, with one face for dry dusting and the other for a damp pass.

White nightstand on wooden legs

A nightstand with a white-lacquered body on slim pale wood legs, which is what keeps it light in a room with a busy wall. Lifting it off the floor lets the skirting and the floor show underneath, and that visually widens the side of the bed. Measure the mattress height before buying: the top should sit level with the mattress or a couple of centimetres above, never below, or you can't reach a glass lying down.

FAQ

How wide should a light hung over the bed be?
The practical rule is that it shouldn't project past the mattress on either side, and ideally should stay well inside it. On a 150-centimetre bed, a light of seventy to ninety centimetres sits well; on a 180 you can go to a metre. Wider than that and it starts appearing in the field of view of someone sitting up reading, and above all it becomes an obstacle when making the bed, which is the moment these actually get knocked. With an open-armed fitting, measure the maximum reach rather than the nominal diameter, because the arms don't all extend the same distance and the spec usually quotes an average that falls short.
How do you stop a single-colour bed looking flat?
By raising the number of fabrics, which is what the eye reads when there's no colour to read. The difference comes from sheen rather than tone: washed cotton is completely matt, velvet shifts from light to dark depending where you look from, and a chunky knit casts its own shadow in every stitch. With those three in the same blue, the bed has relief without having pattern. It also helps to vary cushion formats rather than using all the same, and to lay one piece across the foot in a fabric clearly different from the duvet. What doesn't work is doing the whole bed in one flat fabric and trusting the colour to carry it.
How do you clean a light with many glass globes?
The first thing is to check before buying, because not all of them come apart. If the globes unscrew, you take them down and wash them by hand, which is ten minutes; if they're fixed to the frame you have to clean them one by one up a ladder with your arm raised, and that ends up happening once a year. For cleaning in place a microfibre glove works better than a cloth: with the glove you wrap your hand round the globe and turn, whereas with a cloth you have to hold the sphere with your other hand, and on a fitting with slender arms that means pulling on the frame. Wait for the bulbs to go cold and never push the globes upwards, because open arms go out of true with very little force. And hung over a bed it's worth not leaving it to once a year: the dust that gathers up there falls straight onto the pillows.
