Bedroom with a green and gold panel mounted over slats

The usual way of combining a decorative panel with timber slats is to share the wall out: slats at the sides, panel in the middle, each in its own stretch. Here it's been done differently. The slatting covers the whole wall from floor to ceiling and the green panel is mounted on top of it, so they don't share the wall, one sits in front of the other. It's easier than it sounds and it solves one specific thing: the panel no longer needs anything to frame it.

Floor-to-ceiling slat panel

A panel in full-height format, two metres seventy or three, meant to cover a whole wall with no horizontal joint at mid height. That's the difference from 2.4-metre panels, which on a normal ceiling force you to finish the top with an offcut and that line always shows. If the ceiling is higher, put the cut piece at the bottom and hide it behind the skirting rather than leaving it up top where it's visible.

Fan-shaped velvet headboard

A tall headboard with the channelling opening out towards the top, widening the bed exactly where a straight back contributes nothing. Before choosing the size, check the depth, because the upper zone usually carries more filling and holds the bed off the wall more than expected. Check the mounting system too: legged versions stand on the floor while hanging ones need wall anchors, which gets complicated with slatting in between.

Alcohol-ink effect decorative panel

A large-format piece with fluid green and gold imagery, on stretched canvas or printed board. To hang it over slatting you want the stretched version, which weighs little and allows fixing at two points; rigid framed boards weigh considerably more. Check the finish: matt reads the same from anywhere, while a glossy resin surface throws back the reflection of the wall lights right in the dark part of the image.

Stud finder for walls

A device locating the timber or metal structure behind a cladding, which is exactly what's needed before hanging anything on a slat panel. Between battens there's only cavity, and a screw there holds nothing however easily it goes in. Models that also detect live cable avoid the other problem with slatting, which usually has the wiring run behind it at precisely the height of the wall lights.

Gold satin pillowcases

Covers in a lustrous fabric, bringing gold into the room without adding any metal object. Satin has an advantage that isn't decorative: the smooth fibre rubs hair and skin less than cotton, which is precisely why many people use it. In exchange it slips, so the pillow tends to work its way out overnight; zipped or envelope-closure cases hold it considerably better than open ones.

FAQ

Can you mount a decorative panel on top of a slat panel?
You can, and it's an alternative to sharing the wall out when you want the slatting continuous. The condition is weight: a slat panel is nailed or glued onto battens with a cavity between them, so it won't take anything heavy hung directly. For a light piece, stretched or board-backed, screwing into the battens behind is enough — and they have to be located first rather than hoped for blind. What changes against setting the panel between two bands of slat is how it reads: let in, it looks like part of the wall; mounted on top, it looks like a large-format picture set against a background. For that second reading to work, hold it a few millimetres off the slats so a shadow line shows around it.
What does a fan-shaped headboard give you?
It visually widens the bed at the top, which is exactly where a straight headboard does nothing. As the channelling opens outwards, the piece occupies more wall high up and less at mattress level, so the bed looks more generous without being wider. It also has a practical advantage with a panel behind: the curved silhouette crops the image irregularly, and that disguises the fact that the panel is cut off at mid height, something a straight horizontal edge underlines. What to check before buying is the total depth, because a tall fan usually carries more filling at the top and holds the bed a few centimetres further off the wall than you'd calculate.
Why does gold work with green?
Because they aren't opposites, even though they look it. Green is made of blue and yellow, so a gold, which belongs to the yellow family, doesn't introduce a new colour but brings to the surface something green already contained. That's why the combination reads calm rather than tense, unlike pink or red, which genuinely are green's opposite and create immediate contrast. There's a second, more physical reason: gold isn't a colour but a reflective finish, so it picks up the tone of whatever surrounds it. In a green room, golds turn slightly greenish and integrate further still, while the same objects in a blue room would look considerably cooler.
