Bedroom with an oversized floral mural in cream and burgundy

This mural holds three or four flowers and not one of them whole: they're cropped by the edges of the panel, so what you see isn't flowers but fields of colour at large scale. The interesting part comes after. The room doesn't just repeat the mural's colours, it repeats its proportions: cream across nearly everything, dusty rose on the cushions and burgundy only on the throw. The three tones are the same as on the wall, and they take up roughly the same share.

Large-format bedroom rug

A plain rug in a large size, meant to cover nearly the whole floor while leaving a strip of boards at the perimeter. That margin is what to calculate: twenty to thirty centimetres each side gives the edge without looking as if it came up short. Choose a short dense pile over high pile at this size, because at that scale high pile shows the walking line and doesn't recover with vacuuming.

Narrow linear brass sconce

An elongated, very narrow fitting with a continuous opal diffuser rather than a visible bulb. Width is the deciding figure: on a slatted panel it shouldn't exceed the width of two battens, because anything wider breaks the surface's vertical rhythm. Being diffuse rather than directional it's no good for reading: if you read in bed, add a table lamp or an adjustable arm.

Dark wood nightstand with a fluted front

A two-drawer nightstand with a fluted front and brass pulls. In a room of pale tones, two dark timber pieces are enough to anchor the scheme: more wood in the same tone would start to weigh it down. Check the drawer's depth and not just the width, because nightstands with worked fronts often have a shorter drawer than the carcass suggests from outside.

Plain wide upholstered headboard

A headboard with a plain face, no buttoning or channelling, and wider than the bed on both sides. That extra width is what gives it presence without needing relief, and in front of a highly detailed mural it's exactly what's required. In plain upholstery choose a fabric with some texture over a completely flat one: across a surface this large, a flat matt cloth reads as cardboard from the doorway.

Upholstery and carpet cleaner

A spray-and-extract machine for deep-cleaning a large rug without taking it out of the house. In a bedroom with a near-wall-to-wall textile floor it's the alternative to sending it away, which with a piece this size is a house move. Dry it with a fan afterwards: a rug left damp underneath smells within two days, and that smell doesn't come out again.

FAQ

How do you take the colour proportions from a mural?
By looking at how much of each tone there is, not at which they are. Almost everyone copies a mural's colours and spreads them in equal parts around the room, and the result looks forced. What works is judging the proportions by eye: if the mural is sixty per cent cream, twenty-five rose and fifteen burgundy, that same hierarchy goes onto the textiles — bedding in the dominant, cushions in the secondary, and one single piece in the strong colour. The room then looks as if it came out of the mural rather than being matched to it.
What should you know before ordering a large-scale floral mural?
That it can't be trimmed. A mural with a small motif can be narrowed or extended because the pattern repeats; one with three flowers filling the whole wall can't: taking a hand's width off one side removes an entire bloom and unbalances the composition. Measure the wall with final centimetres, counting the skirting and the area the headboard will cover, and ask the maker for the drop layout to see where the joints fall. Check the file resolution too: at this scale, a poor-quality original looks pixelated from the bed.
Fitted carpet or a large rug in a bedroom?
In Spain, almost always a rug, for practical rather than aesthetic reasons. Fitted carpet gives warmth and absorbs sound, but in a humid climate it holds smells, is hard to dry after a leak and concentrates dust mites in exactly the room where you spend most hours. A large rug gives nearly the same comfort and absorption, can be lifted, goes off to be cleaned and leaves the floor visible around the edge. If you do choose carpet, plan on frequent filtered vacuuming and a deep clean once a year.
