Indoor koi pond under the stairs with three staggered spouts

The void under the staircase has been resolved with a pond built into the floor, and what makes it look designed with the house rather than added later is the three spouts: they're staggered along the diagonal of the flight instead of set at one height. Above, four spots recessed into the stringer repeat that same line. Below, an LED strip under the pond's edge separates the platform from the polished floor. And there are fish in it, which is where this stops being decoration and becomes an aquarium.

Wall spout for a pond waterfall

A steel or resin nozzle built into the wall face, pouring a short sheet onto the water. Against a wide weir, several small spouts spread the flow and sound quieter, which indoors makes them the sensible option. Buy them identical and from one batch even though they go at different heights: sheet width varies between models and across three heights the difference shows.

Biological pond filter

A filter with mechanical media and a biological mass, sized by litres and by fish load rather than by pond volume alone. Indoors, step up from what the maker would specify for a garden, because the fish feed all year and waste output doesn't drop in winter. Keep it accessible: the sponge gets rinsed every few weeks, and in pond water, never tap water.

Pond air pump aerator

An air pump with a bottom diffuser, adding oxygen continuously. In an indoor pond it's more necessary than outdoors, because water kept mild all year holds less oxygen and there's no wind to stir the surface. Check the noise figure before buying: the pump sits outside the water and in a quiet house a cheap model hums all night.

Pond water test kit

A set of reagents or strips measuring ammonia, nitrite, nitrate and pH. It's the cheapest part of the whole installation and the only thing that warns you before there's a problem: in a new pond the nitrite spike of the first weeks is what kills fish, and it's invisible. Choose a liquid reagent kit over strips, which are convenient but far less accurate at low readings.

Japanese stone lantern for a pond

A cast stone lantern of the kind set at the water's edge, with a recess for a candle or an LED candle. Its natural place is the rim of the pond rather than the centre of the composition: in the gardens it comes from it always marks a crossing point or an edge. It's heavy, so decide where it goes before the stone coping is finished.

FAQ

Can you keep koi in an indoor pond?
You can, but it's more demanding than outdoors and it's worth knowing why. Indoors the water stays mild all year, so koi never enter winter dormancy: they eat continuously, grow faster and produce far more waste, so the filter has to be oversized compared with what the same pond would need in a garden. Warm water also holds less oxygen, so aeration is needed. And there's size: an adult koi exceeds sixty centimetres, and a decorative pond like this outgrows them within a few years. For a small indoor pond, the honest option is goldfish or shubunkin rather than koi.
What has to be waterproofed in an indoor built pond?
The whole vessel, and verified before finishing. A pond isn't a planting bed that gets wet when you water: it's a permanently full container over a habitable slab, so waterproof the base and all four sides, carrying it above the maximum water level. What you mustn't skip is the leak test: fill it and leave it three days with the level marked, before laying the stone and the coping. Also plan an overflow, because any failure of the fill valve ends up on the living room floor.
Is an open pond safe inside a house?
With small children, not as it stands. An open half-metre-deep vessel in a circulation route is a real risk, and a low rim barely warns you. There are three reasonable answers: raise the parapet to seat height, cover the vessel with a metal grid just below the water surface — invisible and capable of holding considerable weight — or leave the pond for later and build the void dry. There's also a less obvious hazard: splash on a polished floor is very slippery, so make the pebble margin generous.
